- In 1872, Gao Ji, a graduate of the medical school in Italy, accidentally dropped a brain block in a silver nitrate solution. A few weeks later, he observed this brain block with a microscope, marking a major milestone in the history of neuroscience-"seeing nerve cells for the first time with the naked eye".
